In celebration of its 21st year, i-D launched SMILEi-D. An exhibition highlighting the spirit of the magazine, it was supported by Emporio Armani and curated in collaboration with The Wapping Project. The power station’s Boiler and Filter Houses have been converted into dramatic multipurpose exhibition and performance spaces, and the Engine and Turbine Houses into a restaurant. SMILEi-D can be described as a diary of late 20th century culture, spanning the fashion of the street, catwalk and clubs and reminding us of the models, musicians, artists and designers from around the world who appeared in i-D before most knew who they were.  This multi-media installation incorporates 50 images from the pages of i-D, most notably the magazine’s signature straight-ups, head to toe shots of people looking good in their clothes, along with memorable covers including Madonna, Sade, Björk, Naomi, Kate and Gisele. Combining pivotal visuals, video projections and graphics, SMILEi-D travels through 20 years of publishing history.

Launched 2000

Taking the celebrations to Milan, the exhibition was unleashed during Men’s Fashion Week. As the exhibition’s sponsor, Mr Giorgio Armani says, “I have always admired i-D magazine and believe Terry Jones, through i-D, has had an incredible impact at the cutting edge of fashion and creativity, pioneering the concept of mixing high fashion with street style. i-D by showcasing so much new talent has built an important archive chronicling the last 20 years. I therefore feel it is important to support such an impressive body of work.”

Paris

La ville lumiere, fashion’s global capital and the home of all things dubbed ‘fine’ was host to this part of the Smilei-D exhibition tour. In a city with nothing but class Smilei-D couldn’t have felt more at home, and was welcomed by all at the Espace Cardin with arms and eyes wide open. The sounds of soft beats and popping corks filled every ear in every room of this eternal study into the fashion of the street.
